Good News Bad News

GOOD NEWS – You have 13 moon “birthdays” a year – just look up at the night sky to know when it’s yours.

Think about how arbitrary your birthday is. It is set when the earth and sun happen to be in the exact same relative position they were on the day you were born. Every year on March 26th for instance, the earth is in the same place in its circular path around the sun.

BAD NEWS – The computer mouse is SO DEAD.

It’s not often you can look out in time and see something coming before it hits. But there’s one coming as clearly as a comet in a moonless night – the mouse is on the way out.

GOOD NEWS – You have an “Umbilical Mother” like this picture.

You have a unique bond with your mother that you don’t have with your dad. It’s a physical connection – you were made in your mother – you came out of your mother. Go back one generation – you have four grandparents. Your mother has a special connection to her mother, which makes that grandmother uniquely connected to you.

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH – Three tips to write better.

Writing is in the midst of a renaissance. Writing has flooded over society like a five mile tide. It’s not all social media; it’s everywhere in business and personal lives. We write emails all the time at work and home, and even the executive level writes their own correspondence these days.

BAD NEWS – Onions and crying, an old phenomenon revisited.

Every year it seems someone comes out with a new way to stop the crying.  Huffington Post recently wrote about trying a few new ideas, like holding a slice of white bread in your mouth.

GOOD NEWS – What if everyone recorded everything they see?

We’re already seeing smart-glasses with voice command recording. Storage is getting cheaper and faster. It’s going to happen someday.

An entire 70 years of life, 16 hours a day, would require about 15 petabytes of disk space to hold the video – that’s only 15,000 terabytes, which sounds high, but 15,000 gigabytes sounded impossible not long ago, and you can buy one on Amazon today.

BAD NEWS – Where is plastic surgery going, to cloning?

The news is abuzz about how Plastic Surgeons in New York City are getting a rush of young women wanting Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton’s nose.

GOOD NEWS – Review of Microsoft Surface Pro – a gap filler.

When the iPad first came out, reviews said, “Why get a device too big for a phone, too small for a real computer?” But trendsetters bought them, and the new experience of swiping your way into an amazing array of bright new reading and viewing apps caught on.

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH – Lopsided regulation on businesses that send ads.

Our legislators have been looking out for consumers when it comes to receiving unsolicited advertising. They’ve given us a choice to stop unsolicited phone calls with the National Do Not Call Registry. They’ve given us a choice to stop unsolicited email with the CAN-SPAM Act.

BAD NEWS – Disney’s end to hand drawn animation makes one remember favorites.

They didn’t say “never again”, but Disney made a bold announcement that they have no plans for any more hand drawn animation feature films. (source) There’s no sense complaining – the old method is far more expensive, and their last few attempts failed in the box office.
