Collins' Proposed Change to Federal Health Care Act Gets Mixed Reaction in Maine

Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins today unveiled a bi-partisan proposal aimed at easing pressure on employers under the terms of the Affordable Care Act, due to take effect next year. As it stands, the ACA will require businesses with more than 50 employees, to provide health coverage to those who work at least 30 hours per week. Sen. Collins - a Republican - wants that changed to 40 hours per week. Tom Porter reports.

Counterfeit Drug Dangers: Extent of Problem Debated at Maine Forum

Thanks to a measure recently passed by the Legislature, the state of Maine is poised to allow its residents to order prescription drugs from international pharmacies. The allure of this expanded markert is lower cost. But at a community forum in Bangor today, some health advocates warned of a significant down side: the dangers of counterfeit drugs. But others say conscientious consumers can avoid those dangers. Patty Wight reports.

Maine ranks near the top of a list of states with the largest number of structurally deficient bridges, according to a report out today. The study, by a Washington D.C.-based advocacy group, also says it's getting harder for Maine and other states to make needed improvements, due to declining federal funding for bridge improvements. Maine transportation officials say the state needs to come up with additional resources on its own, if it hopes to make repairs to all the bridges that need bolstering.

Effort to Override LePage Medicaid Expansion Veto Fails in Initial Vote

End-of-the-session emotions were high in the Maine House this afternoon after Democrats fell one vote short of overriding Gov. Paul lePage's veto of a bill that would have expanded Medicaid benefits to 70,000 Mainers. The bill has been tabled in the House until later tonight in hopes of garnering enough Republican votes for an an override. A.J. Higgins has more.
