PORTLAND, MAINE (February 9, 2011)—Applications are now being accepted for 2012 Mainely Character Scholarships to be awarded this spring.

Scholarships will be awarded to Maine high school seniors who will pursue post high school education and demonstrate key attributes of character - responsibility, courage, integrity, and concern for others. Scholastic achievement, athletic achievement or financial need are not considered in awarding the scholarships.

The 2011 scholarship winners demonstrated attributes of character by organizing an effort for Haitian relief, by providing free childcare for strangers, volunteering at the humane society, and by assisting the disabled.

Three scholarships are available in 2012, one $5,000 scholarship sponsored by R. M Davis Inc. of Portland, and two $2,500 scholarships sponsored by Northeast Bank of Lewiston and Market Decisions of Portland.

Applications and information on the scholarships can be downloaded from www.mainelycharacter.org. Applications will be accepted until March 15.

About Mainely Character
Mainely Character was established in 2000 to provide scholarships to Maine high school seniors who have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the principles of courage, integrity, responsibility and concern for others. Through generous donations, the organization awarded $12,500 in scholarships in 2011, including the $2,500 Northeast Bank scholarship named in memory of Mainely Character’s founder Arnie Bushner, who believed that a student's character should count equally with academics and athletics.
